Changes to penalty notices for unauthorised absences

15 July 2024

School attendance is very important to your child’s academic achievement, wellbeing, and wider development.

Please take a moment to understand the following changes to the National Framework for Penalty Notices. These will take effect from 19th August 2024.

Penalty Notice fines for unauthorised absence may be issued if your child has missed 10 sessions (one session is a morning or an afternoon) or 5 days within 10 weeks.

These do not have to be consecutive days or sessions, and can include any type of unauthorised absence including term time holidays. The 10 week period can run across different terms or academic years.

Penalty Notice fines are issued per parent, per child.

First Offence

£160 paid within 28 days, reduced to £80 if paid within 21 days.

Second Offence

£160 paid within 28 days.

Third Offence

There will be no Penalty Notice fine. This will go to the Magistrates court, where a fine of up to £2500 per parent per child could be issued, and may affect a parent/carer's criminal record.

Supporting your child to be the best they can be.

We work closely with families to support school attendance to ensure that our students are happy and successful whilst in school and for the next 70 or more great years.

Support will always be offered and penalty notices are only considered if the support is not engaged with or appropriate.
