The Outward Bound mission:

“To unlock the potential in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild”

The home of Outward Bound® Aberdovey is a former family estate on the eastern outskirts of the coastal fishing village of Aberdovey. The 40-acre grounds rise steeply from just above sea level and include an old farm, from which superb views stir feelings of the exciting adventures ahead!

With easy access to the mountain ranges of mid-Wales, expeditions and activities are quite literally on the doorstep. The centre also has a purpose-built and extensively equipped water activity base in the centre of the village.

The course we have chosen for our Year 7 students at The Samworth Church Academy is designed for students who have recently started secondary education. It focuses on building effective teams, creating a common bond for pupils from different feeder schools and developing the skills and confidence to meet new challenges and opportunities. Participants gain confidence and develop a sense of achievement carried throughout their teenage years.

Obviously such a tailor-made trip must come at a cost, however, as the Academy believes in the importance of outdoor education, we will aim to cover the majority of this cost using our Induction Budget. This means we will only require a small contribution from parents for each Year 7 student. To reduce the cost further, the students will be ‘fund-raising’ throughout the year as a key part of their business enterprise curriculum, so in effect – the more they raise, the less they pay!
